Imagine a sweet, charming six inch bird with large, luminous eyes, polka dots on its flanks and stripes over the remainder of its body. All this on a green, blue or yellow background. This gentle bird is curious and intelligent, enjoys interaction with people, yet is calm, quiet and can talk. This is the Lineolated Parrot. One of the best-kept secrets of the bird world, it has only recently become more available as a companion bird. Those who are fortunate enough to own a Lineolated praise their sweet temperament and gentle nature. They are hardy and are so easy going that they can live in a large aviary with other non-aggressive birds such as canaries, grass keets and certain finches. They will also happily reside in a large cage with toys and activity areas.

We love our Parrotlets, but our newest, the Lineolated, has captured our hearts! They are content to play with their toys while in their cage, yet are eager to join their owners when given the opportunity. Quite often they can be found hanging upside down from the top of the cage or swinging on their toys. They are very agile, which makes them all the more entertaining. Even our adult breeding pairs remain calm and are always curious about any activity nearby.
Lineolateds are unique in that they love to run and climb. If they are provided a network of branches, they will prefer to run along them rather than fly. This preference is probably because they are known to inhabit the canopy of the dense forest of South America and use this climbing and running skill most effectively.

Lineolateds enjoy a varied diet consisting of a mixture of parakeet and cockatiel seed as well as the smaller finch seed as a treat. Fresh fruit and vegetables with cooked rice and beans are an important part of their daily diet.
